The Ironbound section of Newark covers a polluted and unhealthy area mostly inhabited by immigrant people of color who suffer from the lack of environmental justice. The cumulative impact of toxic and polluting industry, transportation, and power generation has produced some of the highest rates of asthma and other pulmonary disease on the East Coast. This project pictures how the Ironbound Community Corporation has created a community of care, with advocacy for environmental justice, fresh organic produce from their urban farm, and a variety of social services – a powerful force for residents’ health and dignity.
